In the tough world of business, doubling sales means Garmin is struggling

Garmin has announced that it is expecting to sell twice as many GPS devices as it sold last year. That figure, which most businesses would kill for, means that Garmin’s success is tapering off dramatically: last year, it sold triple what it sold the year before.

Garmin says it is selling more because more and more people are finding out about GPS technology and wanting to use it in their own cars. While that is certainly true, at some point the market will be saturated enough to level off. It’s the same as people who replaced their vinyl LPs with CDs during the 1980s and 90s. Once that initial boom was over, the market levelled off to normal buying activity.

As Garmin grows by leaps and bounds, it should stay in the thick of things for a long, long time. Despite its “pathetic” 100% growth!
